Yoga Deconstructed® Workshop Weekend

This workshop weekend is for movement educators and the general public. It includes four workshops taught over the course of two days. Participants may sign up for one or all of the workshops.

This workshop weekend can also be included as part of a 200 or 300 hour teacher training.

Put Some Swoosh in Your Toosh

3 hour workshop

Your booty doesn’t have to be a beast. Having strong gluteal muscles can help prevent injury and decrease back pain. But too many times, we’re getting lax in the back – letting our butts develop “gluteal amnesia,” a muscular imbalance that can overwork the hamstrings, hip flexors, and lower-back muscles, leading to pain and weakness. This Yoga Deconstructed®workshop will dispel myths about what to do with your derriere in yoga poses and help you put some swoosh back in your tush. Free your hips so that you can sashay your way to a better behind.

  • Learn how, why, and when to use your glutes during your yoga practice, daily life, and other fitness endeavors.
  • Explore self-massage techniques, targeted stretches, and preparatory exercises
  • Connecting the upper and lower extremities to your spine and pelvis

Rotation: Move More Like A Human & Less Like A Yoga Paper Doll

3 hour workshop

Discover how to build mobility without sacrificing stability using novel exercises that explore dynamic multi-directional movement in the transverse plane. If you’ve ever been afraid to use a kettlebell or a sandbag, didn’t have access to equipment, or were afraid of hurting yourself, this workshop is for you.

Perhaps you’ve wanted to hire a personal trainer to become more educated about building strength. However, it’s too expensive, you don’t like the gym, and you struggle to find someone you connect with and can trust. This Yoga Deconstructed® workshop will teach you the foundational principles for adding load, improving strength, and enhancing coordination, so you can master new motor patterns in a slow, mindful way, and be better prepared to load in the transverse plane.

You will learn about the subtle nuances of rotation that go beyond a passive yoga twist, including:

  • Creating segmental rotation.
  • Using rotation to improve balance and stability.
  • Accessing rotation through cross body patterning (crawling and gait).

P.S. Soothing somatic exercises and myofascial release techniques are included!

Creative Progressions for Dynamic Pelvic Stability

3 hour workshop

Pelvic stability is necessary for pain free movement during your yoga practice and activities of everyday life. Old school yoga taught us that all you need for core stability was to engage mula bandha and uddiyana bandha during your asana practice. However, many practitioners still experience SI joint and low back pain, despite adhering to this practice.

Modern movement science is now finding that pelvic stability requires more than drawing the navel to the spine and engaging the transverse abdominis. While isolated strength training for the pelvis and core can be beneficial, you also need to practice connecting the upper and lower extremities to your pelvis in a coordinated and functional way to experience true stability and address SI joint dysfunction.

In this Yoga Deconstructed® workshop, you will learn preventative strategies as well as a vast array of dynamic and static exercises that will keep your SI Joint stable and strong. Whether you have sacroiliac dysfunction, or just want to keep the low back area safe during your yoga practice, this workshop is for you.

Soothing somatic exercises and myofascial release techniques are also included.

UnWreck Your Neck

3 hour workshop

The daily grind might just be wrecking your neck. Most of us spend a large portion of our days glued to a computer screen or texting on the phone.  Unfortunately your cervical spine bears the brunt of this repeated stress and strain which often leads to stiffness, painful tension and decreased range of motion. Unwreck Your Neck hands you the tools to undo the damage and prevent further injury.

Think of this workshop as a cervical oasis, a place where you’ll learn self-massage techniques using specialized balls to reduce tension in the muscles and fascia of your knotty neck and upper back.

Soothed, you’ll be ready to address all the tissues of your neck, shoulders and forearms with a detailed focus on your deep neck flexors—the “core” of your neck.  Expect to have “a-ha” light-bulb moments as you unveil body blind spots while learning how to change your daily habits to set a new foundation for a healthy, happy neck.

*All four workshops are all levels and qualify for Yoga Alliance CEC’s.

Life has been a bit of a roller coaster lately so Life has been a bit of a roller coaster lately so I am letting it all out by dancing in ways that don’t involve moving my feet very much.On March 15 I got a plantar plate injury while doing an amazing race excursion in Cozumel with my brother, his husband and my niece.Basically, I jogged on concrete for two hours all over the city and I never jog. It’s what we would call an overload injury. It would be like dead lifting 500 pounds when you normally only dead lift 150 pounds. That being said, with what I do for a living, you’d think I would’ve known better but I was living in the moment and my niece wanted to win against dad and daddy so how could I say no?
And no, we didn’t win.Cardiovascularly, I was fine jogging for two hours, but my hypermobile ligaments at the base of my second metatarsal head were not fine.I’ve been consistently doing plyometrics and taking dance classes that involve impact for a few years now but I built up the capacity for those activities GRADUALLY over a long period of time after six years of strength training. While I could take two dance classes in a row no problem, I’ve never been able to jog/run.I remember as a kid trying to go jogging with my dad in the 1970s and getting shin splints and a stitch in my side before I even got to the end of the block 😂.Needless to say, it has been life-changing in a horrible way.I can no longer wear any shoes except for oofos in the house and rocker bottom Saucony running shoes with orthotics when I leave the house. And honestly, that’s the worst thing about this injury. The other life changes I have accepted and adapted to, but wearing the same damn shoes every day drives me insane!!!!I still do yoga and Pilates at home, but I can’t take a class at the gym because I can’t walk barefoot on hardwood floors and load the injured area. And I definitely can’t go to dance classes!I can still lift weights and do cardio on machines that don’t require plantarflexion at the MTP Joint. And I am very grateful for what I can do exercise wise right now!Continued in the comments below ⬇️

Here’s what I did to improve my DEXA scan score: Here’s what I did to improve my DEXA scan score:Over the last three years, I continued the progressive overload training with compound lifts that I’ve been doing since 2017.But instead of working with a personal trainer, I created my own programming.I used everything I learned from my trainers over the previous seven years while gradually increasing the training volume.I also added plyometrics on my lower body days, which is why you’ll see me wearing running shoes in this video.I like to superset lower body plyometric exercises with my lower body strength training exercises. It’s not for everyone, but it works well for me because I still rest between the plyometric exercise and the strength exercise.I’m fortunate to have plenty of time to rest between sets because I have a garage gym at home, so longer workouts are convenient.I often use those breaks to answer emails, grab a snack, or move laundry from the washer to the dryer.Longer rest periods make it much easier to increase your training volume (meaning adding extra sets, exercises, reps, etc.).I also started dancing regularly about three years ago, and the impact from dancing, combined with my weekly plyometric exercises, helped move the needle.I began HMT (hormone maintenance therapy) in July 2022 to help with hot flashes and the other challenging symptoms of perimenopause.A low-dose estrogen patch can also help preserve bone mineral density.Lastly, I increased the number of calcium-rich foods I eat each day.I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments.Have you had a DEXA scan? What are you doing to improve your bone mineral density?#southbaypersonaltrainer #osteopenia #progressiveoverload #plyometrics #womenshealth

It’s been two years since I started taking dance c It’s been two years since I started taking dance classes where you learn choreography. It can be easy to feel like we’re not making progress because progress happens in small increments over long periods of time.Taking a video of yourself dancing especially when you first start out can feel scary and intimidating. But it’s such an important part of the process. I have no desire to teach dance or be a professional dancer, but I do love the feeling of being in a flow state. When I first started taking classes 2 years ago, I was definitely NOT in a flow state lol!I was frustrated and was there simply to enjoy the music, the experience of being in a room filled with other people who were dancing and the freshness of learning something new.I’ve never had good fast twitch muscles.Even when I did gymnastics, I struggled with power/explosivity (which is so important in dance) because of my hypermobility. But there’s always been this call in my soul to be a dancer.Fun fact…when I was 23 years old and I left my financial analyst job on Wall Street in New York City I told them that I wanted to be a dancer 😂.Truth be told, I had no idea what I wanted to do next but that’s a story for another day.Back then, I knew the dancer thing was not going to happen but I had taken a few classes at the @bdcnyc , and it sparked something inside of me.So while I knew that I was unable to pursue that dream at age 23 because I had no time or money for dance classes, the desire still lived inside of me.I’m grateful that I finally have the time and money to take dance classes at age 53. I started when I was 51.This is your Sunday afternoon reminder that it’s never too late to go back in time and revisit some of your unfulfilled dreams.Today I feel like a dancer because I get to go to dance class between 2 to 4 times per week. The definition of “being a dancer” can simply mean that you dance regularly.I’d love to know if there’s something you wanted to do when you were younger, but had to wait to finally pursue it.It’s never too late to learn something new!#southbaypersonaltrainer #GROOV3 #neverstoplearning

For those of you who follow my stories, you’ve see For those of you who follow my stories, you’ve seen the fashion related content I’ve been sharing for the last couple of years, but I realized it’s time to share on my main feed.I’ve been feeling an emotional pull back to the 90s when I lived in NYC and worked in fashion, jewelry and textile design. Anyone else watching the show Love Story?About 20 years ago (I’m 53 now), I left that world behind to become a movement educator and with that came a wardrobe that was much more comfortable. But about two years ago, I realized it was time to find some regular “non-workout” clothes because I didn’t have any for the most part.🤷‍♀️.
Turns out that it’s much harder to shop for clothes when you aren’t working in fashion and around them all the time!Plus, shopping online is so different from shopping in stores so I knew I needed some help.
I feel very fortunate that a client of mine introduced me to @taraaquilinastyle because along with feeling very out of practice in the shopping arena, I was also going through the perimenopause/ menopause transition which meant I had a different body type than in my 20’s and made finding new clothes overwhelming.Tara and I worked to build a wardrobe for me one category at a time.We even tackled the really hard stuff like jeans, dresses and shoes and I’ve learned so much from the whole process.
There’s truly nothing better than knowing when you have to go somewhere that you already have things to wear that you love!
Most of you all know how much I love learning and that I learn best one on one.
I’ve always been a process oriented person because for me it’s all the little steps along the way that make the completion of a project worthwhile.
So here’s some outfits that I am so proud of and love wearing. It isn’t easy to find things that fit your body, your budget, AND that you love wearing.
If you’ve been struggling with any of these same issues, I highly recommend getting some help! It makes all the difference.
Thank you Tara!!! You are the best and I’m so grateful for you. 🙏🏼🥰🤗

It’s been two years since I started taking dance c It’s been two years since I started taking dance classes regularly. One of the hardest things about learning to dance has been learning how to move QUICKLY.Another big challenge has been getting my left leg/foot to respond to my brain 🧠 as quickly as the right side does. And the third biggest challenge has been learning a new movement vocabulary of dance moves. There’s something so gratifying about being a beginner. Each tiny achievement feels so satisfying, especially when you’re surrounded by other people in the class who are having fun while facing similar challenges.I’m lucky to have such great teachers over the past couple of years at the @bayclubs El Segundo and at @theplaygroundla in West Hollywood. Finally being able to get my left leg to do the footwork as fast as the right leg 🦵 in this clip felt like an “IG reel worthy share” so that I don’t forget it happened. And none of this dancing would be possible if it weren’t for all of the strength training I do each week.I feel very fortunate that I know how to program my strength training specifically for the dance moves that are most challenging for me.A huge thank you to those of you who have been cheering me on as I’ve posted dance videos over the last couple of years.🙏🏼I can feel the love! 🤗🥰Wishing you all a happy new year filled with joy, love, and lots of movement! 🥳💗#hiphopdance #GROOV3 #neverstoplearning #southbaypersonaltrainer
I’m trying to be better about sharing things from I’m trying to be better about sharing things from my stories on my grid. 2025 has been all about doing more fun things with friends and less work. Here’s some cherished memories from a night out in West Hollywood celebrating my friend @taraaquilinastyle ‘s birthday 🎉.I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 15 years but must admit I’ve been quite a workaholic until recently so this was my first time experiencing the nightlife in West Hollywood. It was so much fun!
