Here’s one of my favorite ways to train Internal

Here’s one of my favorite ways to train Internal and external rotation of the shoulder. ⁣
⁣
I call it the Yoga Sommelier because it reminds me of when a sommelier places their arm behind their back while serving wine.⁣

A couple of the many challenging aspects of the Yoga Sommelier are to avoid dropping your head and/or pelvis forward in space as your arms move behind your back. ⁣
⁣
The heavier the blanket, the harder it is:). ⁣
⁣
As you hit the 2 positions of internal and external rotation again and again, you will likely start to feel your:⁣
⁣
1. Upper back muscles working to keep your chest up ⁣
⁣
2. Deep neck flexors working to keep your head from poking forward⁣
⁣
And many other things 😉
⁣
Managing the blanket so that it doesn’t slide off is another fun challenge! ⁣
⁣
This is one of the exercises from Chapter 8 in my book, which teaches you how to sequence classes and is a clip from one of the videos in the book’s video companion.

* Give people more strategies to create more movement options, because the body is most resilient when it can move in diverse ways⁣

* Enhance proprioception to improve movement accuracy and control⁣

* Progressively load the tissues to improve strength and adaptability to stress⁣
⁣
While I used to use the word corrective exercise, I don’t anymore for this reason. Rather, in my book and on social media, I now use the term preparatory exercises instead.
⁣
I think this is a more accurate depiction of how we help our students, because the goal isn’t to “correct” anyone’s movement patterns. It’s to help students prepare their body for their activities of choice and life.⁣
