My birthday isn’t until May 20 but Farzad and I My birthday isn’t until May 20 but Farzad and I will be in Tulsa visiting my parents so yesterday my dear friend Sarita aka @goose_face_killah and I did an early celebration 🎉

We saw the @jeffrune exhibit called “the space in which to place me” at @thebroadmuseum and got to meet him and have our books signed.

I highly recommend going to see it!

Jeffrey does a phenomenal job representing the U.S. and critiquing it in a rainbow 🌈 of colors.

Afterwards, we had dinner at @girlandthegoatla and enjoyed the best of focaccia we’ve ever had in our life!

The older I get the more I realize how important it is to slow down and make time to celebrate birthdays with friends and loved ones.

Here’s to my 53rd trip around the sun ☀️

My client Sarita @goose_face_killah went from back My client Sarita @goose_face_killah went from back squatting 53 pounds when she first started training with me in 2023 and now she’s doubled that and back squats 98 pounds!

We thought we’d celebrate her accomplishment by memorializing the event with this video.

There’s something very satisfying about being stronger than you were when you were younger.

We automatically assume that the reverse will happen, but it doesn’t have to.

You can build strength at any age.

When what you do in your weightlifting sessions is 2 to 3 times heavier than anything you need to do in your regular life, your regular life feels easy.

You don’t hesitate before picking up your 50 pound suitcase and putting it in the trunk of your car.

You don’t worry that some part of your body might hurt when you pick up 2-4 heavy bags of groceries and carry them up a couple flights of stairs.

Being strong brings a sense of freedom into every aspect of your life.

Not just physically, but also emotionally.

If you’re curious about the emotional benefits of weightlifting, I highly recommend @laurakhoudari ‘s book called Lifting Heavy Things.

It’s one of a few books I regularly lend to my personal training clients.

I’d love to know …are you stronger than you were when you were younger?

Tight hip flexors? Try this instead of stretching. Tight hip flexors? Try this instead of stretching.

Do 3-4 sets of 5-10 reps per side holding a weight.

Once you can do 3 sets of 10 reps at that weight, bump up the weight by 2-5 lbs and start with 3 sets of 5 reps.

Once you can do 3 sets of 10 reps at the new heavier weight, bump up the weight again by 2 to 5 pounds and cut the reps down to three sets of five.

Repeat on and on and this is progressive overload!

I have my bottom foot hooked into a 60 pound kettlebell.

you could also use a heavy dumbbell.

I like having a box to tap my head on, but it’s not necessary.

if keeping the gesture leg straight is too challenging, keep your knee bent.

Try not to do a backbend!

This is meant to be done with a hollow body hold.

I can’t wait to see Luisa Omielan‘s show God i I can’t wait to see Luisa Omielan‘s show God is a Woman today @elysiantheater !

Here’s the description :

This beautiful stand up show is a new take on questions as old as time.

What is life and how do we navigate through it?

It’s a love letter to the world, featuring a woman’s best friend.

This show unpicks religion’s contribution to the suppression of women’s autonomy. It offers a hilarious alternative perspective on women in scripture. It breaks down everything you thought you knew about Mary Magdalene, the original Slut Shamed woman.

And features the most beautiful story of friendship between a grieving depressed white ex catholic comedian and a Muslim-Pakistani painter decorator.

This show provides some comfort and hope but also challenges people to seek confidence from the wisdom within.

We may not have all the answers as we navigate through this shit show world right now, but maybe our tiny contribution is enough to make an impactful difference.

Me, and you, my beautiful audiences.

Showing the world what we can do together.
@ashleyfranceshoffman and I had a GNO on Saturday @ashleyfranceshoffman and I had a GNO on Saturday to see @44obamamusical and it was phenomenal!

It should be on Broadway and it ranks right up there with my two favorite musicals …Rent & Les Miserables.

I was smiling and laughing so much that my face hurt by the end of the night. 😄

We met someone there who was seeing it for the fourth time and TBH I would go back and see it 3 more times if it weren’t completely sold out.

Fingers crossed that I will get to see it again in another city or when it comes back again. 🤞🏼

if you get the chance to see it, GO!!
When I first learned about this, I was horrified a When I first learned about this, I was horrified and shocked.

You can support Sarah Inama, the sixth-grade history teacher at Lewis and Clark Middle School in Meridian, Idaho who is standing up to this by wearing the “everyone is welcome here T-shirt” from @brigade_screen_printing

I just ordered mine and it’s on its way.

you can also send a card of support to her at:

An “Everyone is welcome” sign must come down from a classroom because not everyone agrees with that sentiment, Idaho teacher, Sarah Inama, says she was told after being ordered to take down the sign.
My favorite way to spend the weekend is with @azma My favorite way to spend the weekend is with @azmanawi in his @groov3dance class at @bayclubs El Segundo.

On Saturday, we learn and rehearse, on Sunday we rinse, repeat and perform !

And btw, in case you thought you were too old to dance , my teacher Azman is 55 and I’m 52 years old.

I was not a dancer growing up. The few times I did try taking lessons I didn’t like it because the style of dance wasn’t for me and I wasn’t very good at it.

In my early 20s I tried some dance classes again, but still felt like it was a total fail.

Now in my fifties, I started taking groove3 dance classes about a year and a half ago.

This time I stuck with it and had no attachments to being “good at it.” Also I love hip-hop music so that definitely kept me consistent.

The classes I took in the past were jazz and ballet, which were not my cup of tea.

When I was growing up, there weren’t any dance studios that offered hip-hop or contemporary dance lessons.

The whole process was a good lesson in making sure not to write something like dancing off completely, but to try different styles to find the one that you love 💗.

My goal a year and a half ago when I started taking groove three classes, was simply to challenge my brain, move my body and meet new friends.

All three of those things happened and I’m sure you can see my joy in the video which is why I share it.

If you find yourself feeling hatred for a certain group, ask yourself where it came from.

Who put that idea into your head?

How might those people benefit from you hating that group?

Is this hatred serving you?

Who benefits from mass paranoia?

Who benefits from division among the people?

Is it really you?

Or is it a distraction designed by those who are hungry for power and control?

I’m so grateful that I no longer have to get dre I’m so grateful that I no longer have to get dressed up from head to toe with hair and make up for a corporate job like I did in my 20s and early 30s.

Casual clothes that are comfortable are my happy place.

During the pandemic, I shifted my business to work from home and that has continued now that I train clients in my garage home gym.

So now I actually look for chances to “dress up” in regular clothes (thank you @taraaquilinastyle for helping me with this!), but since that doesn’t happen often, I started getting “dressed up” for work even though I’m just in the garage at my house.

This is happened because I was inspired by @jordanaedelstein .

She regularly talks about dressing up for yourself… not just for other people.

I think this is so important!

Often times we wear things that aren’t comfortable or don’t fit our personality for a plethora of reasons.

I’ve definitely fallen into that trap but now when I shop for new items to wear, I think about one main thing which is

Does it bring me joy?

If you don’t follow Jordana‘s stories, you should! Aaand her podcast and newsletter are fantastic!

Yesterday I bought a 2 new pairs of sneakers because I wear sneakers almost all the time 😉

I’ve had my eye on these Nike Cortez soft fuzzy sneakers for a while so here they are styled with my favorite sunglasses, sweater, & leggings.

This outfit definitely brings me joy when I wear it!

Fun fact: the Nike Cortez sneaker came out in 1972, which was the year I was born.

I know one of the main reasons I love this style is because I had the same exact sneaker attached to bright colorful wheels & wore them as rollerskates as a kid.

I clearly remember that the shoes were a royal blue with a turquoise swoosh, and I replaced the regular shoelaces w/ ice cream 🍦 cone patterned shoelaces.

I was a rollerskating queen 👸 in our neighborhood in the late 70s.

A huge thank you to my mom @judyalt21 & dad who were kind enough to indulge my Nike rollerskating style fantasies. 🙏🏼

The good vibes & nostalgia live on! 🌈🦄
