The interplay between the various hormones that affect our tissues is complex. That is true for the interplay between our sex hormones — estrogen, progesterone and testosterone as well. These two studies add some potentially useful information about estrogen. You should of course always take your individual circumstances into account when putting knowledge into practice, and when it comes to sex hormones consult with a knowledgeable ob-gyn.

Workshop 1: Incorporating Somatics and Rolling Patterns in Classes⁣
⁣
Somatic exercises serve as regressions for traditional yoga poses and allow us to teach osteokinematics in a way that is embodied and down regulates the nervous system. This workshop will teach you how to select and sequence somatic exercises in supine, side lying, and prone to help your students improve movement patterns and prepare their bodies to navigate external load and asana. ⁣

Workshop 2: Using Primal Sequencing to Evolve Passive Postures into Active Movements ⁣
⁣
Traditional asana involves many passive kneeling and seated positions. While this alone is not an issue, many of our students are not well adapted to sit on the floor and find it difficult or uncomfortable to assume these postures and transition to kneeling or standing. This workshop will give you strategies and mini sequences to incorporate into your classes to improve mobility, strength, and power in a way that is fun and challenging!⁣

Workshop 3: Applying Progressive Load and Control to Standing Transitions ⁣
⁣
Many standing poses involve holding one position at your end range of motion for a sustained period of time. While this may promote isometric strength at your end range, it doesn’t build strength in the transitions. This workshop will explore how to apply strength training principles, such as progressive overload to standing poses and transitions. ⁣
⁣
Workshop 4: An Interdisciplinary Movement Approach to Yoga Sequencing⁣
⁣
Are you struggling to connect the dots between yoga and all of the movement modalities that you’re studying? This workshop will teach you how to incorporate everything you’ve learned in the previous three workshops into full length classes. It will draw on the sequences outlined in my book.⁣
I get a lot of questions about sequencing, so here I get a lot of questions about sequencing, so here are some tips!
 
I start with a peak pose that I want to build up to and I consider the directions of movement that will be required to be well prepared for the peak pose. 
 
Next, I select a variation of constructive rest to start class with to downregulate the nervous system.
 
From there, I incorporate a ball rolling or somatics sequence to improve proprioception and help students be more successful with challenging movements that come later in class.
 
After that, I will teach a series of preparatory exercises that relate to the peak pose in supine, prone, or side lying before moving onto kneeling and standing work.
 
Finally, I will conclude class with a movement sequence that incorporates more traditional yoga poses and savasana. 
 
The end result is that students tell me they feel like they had the experience of a yoga class, except their joints feel better and the poses and positions that they struggle with felt more accessible or less painful.
 
Teaching in this order can help students connect to their deep stabilizing muscles and better prepare their bodies for traditional yoga poses. Additionally, it scales the exercises, so the most challenging movements happen near the end of class and students have an opportunity to opt out of a movement and pick a regression that was taught earlier. Finally, sequencing classes in this way provides an experience of mindfulness and flow, even if some of the movements aren’t traditional yoga asanas.

I get asked this question over & over again no mat I get asked this question over & over again no matter what I am teaching. While I know that this question comes from a desire to keep our students safe & it is important to have an understanding of general contraindications, I think it also stems from the “correct & protect” philosophy, rather than the “exposed & adapt framework.”⁣
⁣
Another problem with being concerned with a specific set of contraindications is that it is rooted in binary black & white thinking & being overly attached to labels & diagnoses. ⁣
⁣
As teachers, we know that we are not our label or our injury. We are whole & complete human beings who deserve to recover & grow strong based on our unique individual experiences. ⁣
⁣
By the time I am working with a private client one on one, they have already done their physical therapy or are doing physical therapy in conjunction with their sessions with me. At that point, if contraindications are an issue, I will ask them to check with their physical therapist for guidelines about what they should or should not be practicing. However, my scope of practice is to teach movement & not to fix people or solve their pain, so if a specific joint needs medical attention, I will refer out.⁣
⁣
When it comes to teaching, if someone has a diagnosis that dictates the types of movements we do, I will consider their stress levels, movement or loading history, & beliefs around what they perceive as safe.⁣
⁣
What we work on together will change depending on the individual & what stage they are in the healing process. So with this in mind, I would propose that we be less concerned with contraindications & more concerned with using our critical thinking skills to ask our clients what movements feel good or bad that day?⁣
⁣
If you do need someone’s contraindications, then have them consult their medical provider. However, know that they are simply guidelines & not hard and fast rules & that long term, most students will experience the most success through pain science education, progressive loading, graded exposure, & self-inquiry.⁣
⁣
How do you approach working with folx who are stuck in binary black-and-white thinking and/or are overly attached to labels/diagnoses?⁣
Why I no longer use the term corrective exercise⁣
⁣
The term corrective exercise has been used for a long time now, but if you’ve spent any time studying modern movement science, you know that we really can’t correct movement, so much as:⁣
⁣
* Give people more strategies to create more movement options, because the body is most resilient when it can move in diverse ways⁣
⁣
* Enhance proprioception to improve movement accuracy and control⁣
⁣
* Progressively load the tissues to improve strength and adaptability to stress⁣
⁣
While I used to use the word corrective exercise, I don’t anymore for this reason. Rather, in my book, you’ll see I use the words preparatory exercises. ⁣
⁣
I think this is a more accurate depiction of what I teach, because my intention is not to “correct” anyone’s movement patterns, but to help students prepare their body for their activities of choice and life.⁣

I watched this documentary on the airplane and I h I watched this documentary on the airplane and I highly recommend it! I’ve never read any of her books but I remember how popular they were in the ‘80s. Jackie was a badass feminist who made her own rules. She was an author who understood and embraced branding/marketing which allowed her to no longer be financially dependent on her husband(s) in a time when that was the status quo. If you were a child of the 70s you’ll love this documentary ❤️
